Vaccinations

Your rabbit should be vaccinated against the following, when staying here at Brinsworth Bunny Boarding.

Myxomatosis: is typically spread by blood sucking insects and in particular the rabbit flea.  All breeds of domestic rabbit can be affected.  Symptoms include a classic bulging of the eyes, swellings to head, face and bottom areas.  Severe swelling can cause blindness, leading to difficulty in drinking and feeding.  Bacterial respiratory infection often complicates the disease resulting in a fatal pneumonia.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) is spread by direct contact between rabbits (both wild and domesticated) and also via indirect contact. Possible sources of indirect contact are people, clothing, contaminated hutches and bedding, as well as insect vectors such as fleas. Signs include depression, collapse, difficulty in breathing, convulsions, high body temperature, lethargy and bleeding from the nose. Death usually occurs within 12-36 hours after the onset of fever and the mortality rate can be as high as 90-100%.

RHD2 presents even fewer symptoms than the initial strain of the above VHD virus. It can result in sudden death, although there are many other causes of this in rabbits. Consequently, the real incidence of RHD2 is unknown, especially as most cases are suspected rather than confirmed with tests. Little can be done to save other companion rabbits from suffering the same fate thereafter and the disease can spread even further without careful decontamination.

The RHD PLUS vaccine now fully covers your rabbit from all of the above, its should be administered once yearly by your vet
